A Long Tale...

...er, umm...
The Long TAIL:

So there is this theory right...it's ramifications apply to many a niche business...blah blah blah. Basically what it boils down to is the idea that in the new mass marketplace, with so many options readily available to the consumer, businesses are now finding that more profit is derived from selling MORE less popular niche products than is derived from selling LESS more popular mainstream products.
[Whew, what the fuck kind of sentence was THAT?]

Let's try this again:

So the Long Tail is full of niche stuff, and is gettibg longer everyday. The reason I feel that this is exciting/interesting/worth mentioning is its ramifications with regards to INDEPENDENT MUSIC. The wikipedians said it best:
"Often presented as a phenomenon of interest primarily to mass market retailers and web-based businesses, the Long Tail also has implications for the producers of content, especially those whose products could not — for economic reasons — find a place in pre-Internet information distribution channels controlled by book publishers, record companies, movie studios, and television networks. Looked at from the producers' side, the Long Tail has made possible a flowering of creativity across all fields of human endeavour."
Summed Up:
"Make your shit. The people that want it will find it."

Now to act like you all didn't already know that...
[preach to preachers much?]
